Apple is preparing to transform Siri, its digital assistant, by integrating advanced AI capabilities. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new version of Siri, possibly called “LLM Siri,” will be powered by Apple’s own AI models, aiming to provide users with more natural, conversational interactions. This shift will make Siri more capable of handling advanced tasks and enable users to engage with it in a manner similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Live.

The new version of Siri will reportedly improve its ability to interact with third-party apps, utilizing App Intents more effectively. In addition, Siri will have new AI features that allow it to summarize and generate text, powered by Apple Intelligence. These enhancements are part of Apple’s broader strategy to introduce AI more deeply into its ecosystem, particularly with iPhones.

In terms of timing, although Apple could announce some of these changes as soon as next year, the full transition to the new AI-driven Siri system is expected to happen by the spring of 2026. Apple’s senior vice president of software, Craig Federighi, touched on the evolution of Siri during an interview with The Wall Street Journal. He explained that the purpose of Siri remains different from OpenAI’s advanced voice models, such as ChatGPT, which are good for abstract tasks like answering questions on quantum mechanics or creating poems. In contrast, Siri’s strength lies in handling practical, everyday tasks quickly and locally on users’ devices, such as opening a garage or sending a text.

So far, Apple has been slow to roll out AI features, introducing a basic ChatGPT integration in Siri only last month as part of the iOS 18.2 beta. The company is also planning new features, such as enabling Siri to understand what’s displayed on the user’s screen and perform actions within apps. These features are slated to arrive next year, continuing Apple’s gradual push to make Siri a more advanced and helpful assistant.
