The European Commission has announced the establishment of the AI Office to advance the development, deployment, and regulation of AI across the Union. This new office is responsible for implementing the AI Act, particularly in relation to general-purpose AI models, and will spearhead efforts in AI safety, compliance, and innovation. Comprising various units—Regulation and Compliance, AI Safety, Excellence in AI and Robotics, AI for Societal Good, and AI Innovation and Policy Coordination—the office will coordinate with Member States and foster an innovative EU ecosystem for trustworthy AI.
With over 140 staff including specialists and advisers, the AI Office will enforce the AI Act, develop codes of practice, conduct testing, and guide AI applications. It becomes operational from 16 June and will work alongside the European Artificial Intelligence Board and other entities to ensure a coherent and effective approach to AI regulation and innovation. The AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI law, is expected to come into force by the end of July 2024.
